Ever noticed how AI output, e.g. those fantastical videos, look a bit like something we've seen in a dream?

You're not alone. And it turns out there's some intriguing science behind this.

AI and human dreams share surprising similarities in how they work, leading to comparisons that shed light on both artificial intelligence and human consciousness. At first, it might seem strange to compare AI—built on algorithms and data processing—to the ethereal world of dreams, where imagination and emotions reign. But at a closer look, these two fields overlap in fascinating ways.

Pattern Recognition and Recombination

Just like our minds during dreams, AI can detect patterns and generate new combinations of known elements. When we dream, our brains pull from memories and feelings, sometimes weaving them into new narratives or scenarios that surprise us. AI’s capacity to “abstract” data into meaningful outputs parallels how dreaming might help us distill experiences into memory or insight.

AI’s creative outputs, such as AI-generated art or music, also stretch the bounds of convention, producing abstract or surreal results.
